New to Ashtanga Yoga? Here's How to Start
If you're new to Ashtanga Yoga Mysore style, welcome! You can either begin directly in our regular Mysore classes or join an introduction course designed especially for beginners.
Begin Your Yoga Journey: From Guided Classes to a Personal Practice
At Astanga Yoga Studio, we invite you to deepen your practice—transitioning from guided classes to the structured, personalized path of Mysore-style. Here, you’ll cultivate ownership of your practice, tailored to your body and unique journey.
In traditional Mysore-style, practice is individualized rather than guided. You move at your own pace, supported by a teacher. You will build discipline and mindfulness — not through performance, but through consistent, intentional effort.
Guidance is offered to students on an individual level, taking into account the skill and capabilities of the practitioner so that their practice can flourish. Much of the learning in a Mysore class is based on your relationship with your teacher, they are observing you practice daily, and can provide feedback and help with hands-on and verbal instruction.
Like Astanga schools worldwide, our studio is a dedicated space for you to cultivate a consistent, personal yoga routine. The Mysore method helps you build this habit — one breath, one movement at a time.
No Experience? No Problem.
No prior knowledge are needed. You don’t need to know the sequence or be able to do every pose. The sequence unfolds gradually through repetition, with each posture adapted to your body and experience.
This practice is for every body — regardless of age, flexibility, or background. Start where you are. With time, challenges soften, and strength, flexibility, and focus grow from within.
We support you
Although Mysore classes are self-paced and quiet, a teacher is present to guide you. You'll receive personal attention to help you with:
- Learn the sequence
- Refine alignment and technique
- Progress safely
It may take a few sessions to settle in, but once you experience this empowering tradition, you may never return to conventional classes.
